One young man is dead and another is in the hospital following a double shooting Sunday evening.
On July 23, just before 6:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to 8th Street and Bales Avenue on a reported shooting.
Upon arrival, multiple concerned citizens summoned officers to an unresponsive male located on the sidewalk who was suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. EMS responded simultaneously with officers, and pronounced the victim deceased at the scene.
An additional victim was transported to the hospital suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, and is currently listed in critical condition.
Police say both victims are juvenile males.
Homicide detectives and crime scene personnel responded to the scene for processing and gathering evidence, as well as speaking with any potential witnesses.
Detectives do not currently have any persons of interest in police custody and this investigation is considered ongoing.
If anyone was in or around the area at this time and saw or heard anything they are asked to contact homicide detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously to the TIPS hotline.
“We are committed to assisting victims of violent crimes through use of Missouri’s Protection Program for Victims/Witnesses of Violent Crime,” KCPD spokesperson Alayna Gonzalez said. “Funding for temporary, or even permanent relocation, may be available but is subject to pre-approval by the State’s administering agency. We are working with Partners for Peace in all our homicide investigations to monitor risks for retaliation and provide social services to affected residents.”
