A fatal fire broke out this morning in Northeast Kansas City Apartments at 464 Highland Avenue.
The fire was first reported at 6 a.m. and a man, still in the building, was discovered by firefighters and taken to the hospital.
The man was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Firefighters concluded reckless smoking caused the fire and $35,000 in damage to the apartment building.
