A standard driving under the influence (DUI) checkpoint at 7621 Troost quickly turned into a dangerous ride on top of a vehicle for one civilian member of the Kansas City Police Department.

During the DUI checkpoint held Saturday, June 11, a police officer confronted a man in a dark colored Dodge car who then proceeded to speed out of line and into a civilian member of the KCPD.

He continued to accelerate with the KCPD employee on the hood of his vehicle, striking a KCPD vehicle and speeding away from police heading south on Troost.
Shortly after shots were fired by KCPD, the victim fell off the vehicle near 82nd and Troost.

Police officers were unable to catch the suspect, but quickly located the victim with serious injuries and transported him to a nearby hospital.  The victim is a male in his 30’s with approximately eight years as a civilian member with the KCPD.

Police officers have found a vehicle, thought to be the suspect’s, illegally parked on the 200 block of West Bannister.

Currently, investigators are following up on the vehicle.

Anyone with information should call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.

Before the incident, 123 vehicles were stopped during the checkpoint.  This resulted in six DUI arrests, three driving while suspended or revoked charges, one hazardous moving violation, one seatbelt violation, five Kansas City warrants and six other traffic violations.
