This week’s book recommendation is from Deborah Gamm, Senior Library Technical Assistant at the North East Branch Library.
Deborah chose “The Radium Girls” by Kate Moore from the library’s Juvenile section.
“‘The Radium Girls’ is the true story of young women who were selected to paint dials on the faces of watches and clocks using radium in the early twentieth century,” Deborah said. “The work was considered prestigious; with generous wages, this made it a highly sought-after position. What these young girls were unaware of was the danger presented to them by their work. I chose this book as an early representation of social justice.”
This book is available to those with a Kansas City Public Library card in a hard copy or eBook form.
