If you find yourself in the Historic Northeast looking for a bite of Kansas City barbecue, Wolfepack BBQ is an excellent choice. Situated in Columbus Park off of Fifth Street, this restaurant contains all you need for a lunch break or an evening outing.

Walking into the building, you are met with its history. The tin ceiling and brown brick walls create its vintage feel. What hits you first is the smell — an aroma of smoked meat  floating through the air.

Charm is key in a restaurant’s success and Wolfepack is in no shortage of it. The full rolls of paper towels placed at each table are a warning that you will be digging deep into its menu.

Speaking of which, the menu for this place keeps it simple. You have your standard barbecue items — brisket, pulled pork, burnt ends, turkey and ribs. These come as just plates of meat or as a sandwich. Available sides include classics like french fries, white cheddar mac and cheese, onion rings, loaded potato salad and cowboy beans.

I ordered the turkey sandwich, french fries and white cheddar mac and cheese with added bacon. I also sampled the sliced brisket sandwich and onion rings.

The turkey sandwich is served on a bun with thick-cut chunks of turkey. I added its signature barbecue sauce, which comes on every table. The turkey was packed with flavor, seasoning and was very tender. I didn’t feel like I was biting through thick turkey, while its sauce tasted very sweet and smooth. There wasn’t any added tanginess or spice like a lot of other barbecue sauces have. However, you can get a spicy variant of this sauce if you so choose.

The brisket was also very tender and melted in the mouth almost like a pot roast. The onion rings were made from red onions and a fluffy beer batter.

The restaurant additionally has a bar area — complete with cocktails, beers, seltzers, wine and whiskey.
