Literacy Tutor Training Series
Literacy Kansas City is looking for more volunteers to tutor students from Penn Valley Community College who need to improve their reading and writing skills before they can enroll in regular college courses. Penn Valley tutors will meet their students at Penn Valley CC twice a week for 90 minutes; other tutors meet students at libraries or other public places throughout the greater metropolitan area for a minimum of one year. Literacy KC will continue its literacy tutor training series on Jan. 18 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the American Red Cross building, 211 W. Million Dollar Movie
Join North-East Public Library, 6000 Wilson Rd., for its “Million Dollar Movie” at 10 a.m. Each month the library presents some of the best in classic cinema for your viewing enjoyment. Movies are shown on the big screen and are free of charge. Refreshments are also provided.

Hard hat tours
Take a hard hat tour of Corinthian Hall, the more than 100-year-old home of lumber baron Robert A. Long and his family.  Kansas City Museum, 3218 Gladstone Blvd., Kansas City, Mo., will now host the free tours on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Indian Mound Neighborhood meeting
Indian Mound Neighborhood Association will host its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the North-East Public Library, 6000 Wilson Rd. Indian Mound rescheduled the meeting to Thursday due to the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.

Pho Hoa Lunar New Year Celebration
Join Pho Hoa Noodle Soup for a Lunar New Year celebration at noon and 7 p.m.  In addition to free appetizers during the noon hour and 7 p.m. hour, there will be a dragon dance performance and fireworks. All are welcome to attend.

EMPOWER Kidney Disease Classes

Repurposing site tours for NE Middle, Thacher
Kansas City Public Schools will host a site tour of shuttered Northeast Middle School and Thacher Elementary. The site tour will begin at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, at Northeast Middle, 4904 Independence Ave. Following the tours, a meeting will be held at 6:15 p.m. at North-East Public Library, 6000 Wilson Rd., to discuss reuse options.
