Most of the candidates running for the Kansas City Public Schools Board of Education seats are write-in candidates, which may make voting a little more challenging this year. We have all the details you’ll need for the voting process.
The KCPS election will be held Tuesday, April 3 with polling hours from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Write-in voting
A list of declared write-in candidates will be posted on the Blue Board at the entrance of each polling location. Write-in ballots will not be announced on election night, since 90 percent of Kansas City voters use the OptiScan paper ballot machines. Therefore, the write-in ballots must be hand-counted. The Kansas City Election Board (KCEB) estimates it will take at least seven to 10 days to finish counting the write-in ballots.
Absentee Voting
Walk-in absentee voting at KCEB’s office will continue until 5 p.m. Monday, April 2, and is also available on Saturday, March 31, from 8 a.m. to noon. All mail-in absentee ballots must be received by the election office no later than 7 p.m. on April 3.
In Missouri, voters must have one of five reasons to vote absentee: out of town on election day; religious restrictions; incapacitated, hospitalized or homebound, or caring for a person who is confined; election authority employee; incarcerated but eligible to vote.

To find out where you should vote, visit www.kceb.org and enter your last name and birth date in the “check your voter status” box, or click on the “poll log” link on the KCEB homepage.
Voter identification
Voters may present several forms of identification including:
• Missouri or out-of-state driver’s license
• Local, state or federal government issued I.D. (employee, passport, social security card, military, etc.)
• Missouri higher education I.D. (college or university)
• Local election authority issued I.D.
• Current bank statement, utility bill, government paycheck, or government document containing the voter’s name and current address
Photo identification is not required to vote in Missouri.
