Two Kansas City men were sentenced Feb. 4 for a grocery store robbery and murder near 12th Street and Askew.
Jackson County judge Joel May sentenced 21-year-old Travis Knott to 18 years in prison for the murder of Wilfredo Melgar, 10 years for first degree robbery and 10 years for two counts of armed criminal action.
Clifford V. Jackson was sentenced to 12 years for first degree robbery and five years for armed criminal action.
Both Jackson and Knott will serve their sentences concurrently.
On Nov. 21, 2009, Knott and Jackson robbed a Latino grocery store and Knott fatally shot the store clerk, Melgar.
According to court documents, Knott and Jackson robbed Melgar of $83, two cell phones and a pack of cigarettes.
Melgar followed the suspects to an alley about two blocks away from the store and was on the phone to police dispatchers when Knott emerged from a stairwell.
Knott shot Melgar in the back as fled the area.
A store employee continued to follow the suspects until they entered an apartment building near 11th Street and Benton Boulevard.
Kansas City, Mo., police surrounded the building and the suspects surrendered a short time later.
