BREAKING: Saturday evening, Aug. 31, the Accident Investigation Section (AIS) of the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) — along with East Patrol Division (EPD) officers — were dispatched to the Truman Road Bridge overlooking Manchester on a confirmed hit and run fatality collision, according to a release from KCPD media unit.

The preliminary investigation revealed two vehicles — a white Chevrolet HHR and a gray Nissan Altima —were both experiencing mechanical issues. The HHR and Altima had stopped in the westbound, inside lanes of the Truman Road Bridge over Manchester. The Chevrolet driver was sitting in passenger seat of said vehicle, while awaiting assistance.

The Nissan motorist was standing outside the respective vehicle, while its front seat passenger sat unrestrained in the passenger seat. At the same time, a black Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling westbound on Truman Road at a very high rate of speed.

The Jeep struck the rear end of the Nissan. This impact caused the Nissan to strike the Chevrolet and the pedestrian who was standing outside the vehicle, while redirecting the Nissan into the outside lane of Truman Road. This individual was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries, according to a release from KCPD media unit.

The front seat passenger of the Nissan was declared deceased at the scene. The passenger of the Chevrolet was uninjured in the collision. The driver of the jeep fled the scene on foot and was not located. The pedestrian is currently in very critical condition and the investigation is ongoing.

The Nissan passenger has been identified by KCPD as Heidi M. Hain. She was 45 years old.

KCPD shared this incident marks Kansas City’s 63rd fatality of 2024 in comparison to the 60, which the City saw at this time last year.
