Due to an increase in COVID-19 cases in Jackson County, Mo., the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum will close until further notice, effective today, July 26.
The Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum is part of the Presidential Libraries system administered by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). NARA monitors local conditions of all of its facilities around the country.
The decision to close resulted from a NARA directive, based on local COVID-19 metrics. The seven-day average for new COVID-19 cases and the positivity rate in this area both currently exceed the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) definition of “high transmission,” which is more than 99 new cases per 100,000 and a positivity rate of more than 9.9 percent. Two other NARA facilities also were closed in the Kansas City area: the Kansas City Archives and Federal Records Center in Lee’s Summit.
“It is very disappointing to close our doors so soon after our reopening, but this is an unfortunate precaution based on public safety,” said Truman Library Director Kurt Graham. “We’re hopeful that this setback is temporary.”
After closing in 2019 for the most extensive renovation in its history, the Truman Library reopened to guests on a limited basis on July 2, 2021. Timed tickets, purchased on the Library’s website, were required. Refunds will be issued to guests who purchased tickets through August 15. Additional refunds will be announced at a later date, if necessary.
The National Archives will reopen the Truman Library once public health conditions improve. For updates, please check the Truman Library’s website, www.trumanlibrary.gov.
