KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Crews from Houston Excavation came to the Historic Northeast on the morning of Thursday, June 2 t0 demolish the last vestige of the October 12, 2015 fire that killed two Kansas City, MO firefighters.

Speedy Cash fought the city-ordered demolition, but neighborhoods in the Northeast pushed back against Speedy Cash, citing current city zoning ordinances that disallowed another short term lender to rebuild on Independence Avenue.The demolition was good news for Jim Mesh, brother of John Mesh, one of the firefighters killed in the fire.

“It’s about time,” said Mesh. “Maybe now our families can have some semblance of closure in this tragedy.”

Officials with Houston Excavation said their work would be complete by Friday afternoon. See a video and photos of the demolition below.
