As the sun began to set on Wednesday, Dec. 4, neighbors with the Independence Plaza Neighborhood Council gathered at Prospect Plaza Park (1100 Prospect Ave) to share some holiday joy and treats.

Earlier this week, a dozen wreaths decorated with red bows and clear mini lights were hung on light poles along the perimeter of this park. To celebrate what this council said they hope will be an annual event, members of the community were invited to view these wreaths, while enjoying a cup of hot cocoa and a variety of cookies.

With solar powered lights, these wreaths automatically come on as daylight wanes and continue to offer holiday cheer to anyone walking or driving by. Council members also set up a banner facing Prospect Ave., which offers holiday greetings in multiple languages.

Council Secretary, Megan Nelson Morgan stated funding to purchase the decorations was supplied by the Neighborhood Rising Fund. The council has used this same funding to host several block parties during summer months but wished to also offer something festive that showed the community cares about Prospect Park and those who use it.

The Council coordinated with Jerusalem Farm — a Catholic intentional community — to use its bucket truck to hang the wreaths. As the decorations were placed on poles along 11th St., Nelson said neighbors came out to see what was happening and to thank them for their efforts to better the park during the cold, dark nights ahead.
