With a 7-0 record this season, the Kansas City Chiefs appear unstoppable and their fans are just as dedicated.

It wasn’t the red and gold that stood out at the game Sunday, Oct. 13, but the roaring of the crowd. With a united front, Chiefs fans broke the Guinness World Record for being the loudest outdoor sports stadium in the NFL, clocking in at 137.5 decibels and surpassing the Seattle Seahawks fans’ previous record of 136.6 decibels.

During the Oct. 17 Kansas City City Council meeting, council members passed a resolution to honor the Chiefs fans and their world record win.

Several city council members attended the Oct. 13 game against the Oakland Raiders, and City Council member Jermaine Reed said at one point the deafening noise made him cover his ears.

“I’m still hoarse from Sunday,” Chiefs fan and season pass holder Connie Jo Gillespie said. “It was unbelievable. The franchise, the fans and the team – we were all united in one incredible, unstoppable force. Honestly, we’ve got the best franchise in the NFL.”

A lifelong Chiefs fan, Gillespie joked she’s as old as the Chiefs.

“It’s a part of my identity,” she said.

Gillespie attended the Oct. 13 game and said the game was nearing the end when Chiefs fans were still about a decibel short.

“It was getting down to the wire,” she said.

With 30 seconds left on the clock, Chiefs fans started chanting “6 and 0” and when the Chiefs’ Derrick Johnson sacked the Raiders’ quarterback, the fans errupted and broke the Guinness World Record.

There were hugs, high fives. A number of fans cried, Gillespie included.

“It was very emotional,” she said.

City Council member Melba Curls called herself a “loyal Chiefs fan,” and added, “I’m proud to be a Chiefs fan wherever I go. Not only are we the loudest fans, I think we’re the best fans.”

City Council member Scott Wagner agreed and commended the fans on their routine sportsmanship. At other stadiums, altercations and injuries break out between fans, but at Arrowhead, that’s not the case, he said.

“We have classy fans who respect the other side,” Wagner said.

For Gillespie, attending the Oct. 13 game is something she’ll never forget.

“It was unbelievable,” she said. “Those are memories that I’m going to cherish forever.”
