One of Northeast News’s own was honored on Thursday, Nov. 14 as Latinx Education Collaborative (LEC), Revolution Educativa (RevEd) hosted its 2024 “Impacto Changemaker” awards ceremony — the third annual celebration overall.
Impacto Changemaker — an initiative created by Rev Ed, a Northeast nonprofit Latino education and advocacy organization — centers around awarding individuals and organizations based on two phrases: uplifting the community and inspiring change, particularly within the Latino community, respectively.
Daisy Garcia Montoya was one of 19 presented with an Impacto Changemaker award Thursday evening at Rev Ed’s new location on Lexington Avenue — just right down the street from its former spot (2203 Lexington Ave).
Upon entrance, attendees were greeted with Latin-inspired DJ mixes, multi-colored and frequently changing party lights, various refreshments of choice and sandwiches, among other nourishment.
The evening kicked-off with a registration-required social hour mixer, allowing community members and award recipients alike to enjoy refreshments, music and revel in celebration and the company of their peers.
This followed with a welcome from Rev Ed CEO, Edgar Palacios and a three-part awards ceremony presented by Community Outreach Director, Ivan Ramirez, Communications Director Tricia McGhee and General Director of Advocacy and Community Impact, Christy Moreno.
Garcia Montoya — a professional journalist, who has reported on Spanish education within the Northeast for nearly five years — was honored for her contributions to the Latino Community. This includes increasing Northeast News’s Hispanic audience reach and expanding coverage beyond the traditional.
The evening concluded with a closing and call to action from Moreno.
