For a third year, several area schools are partnering to promote the 3rd Annual Project Valentine Bear Teddy Bear Drive to benefit Children’s Mercy Cancer Center and all Children’s Mercy patients.

Partnering schools include Holy Cross Catholic School, Historic Northeast; Metropolitan Community College – Blue River Campus; Nativity Catholic School; St. Mary’s Catholic High School; and Spring Branch Elementary School, Independence, Mo.

Frank Shane, then-senior at Holy Cross, founded the project in 2010 as a community service project. Last year, Shane’s sister Raye Ann continued the service project.

The community is encouraged to join the community-wide Teddy Bear Drive by dropping off new bears with tags attached to any of the five schools listed above. With Children’s Mercy averaging 250 patients daily, the goal is to give away 500 bears this year, Frank said.

Those in Northeast may drop off their bears at Holy Cross, 121 North Quincy, Kansas City, Mo.
