KANSAS CITY, Missouri — The Kansas City Police Department is advising Royals fans to beware of counterfeit tickets to the Major League Baseball World Series.
According to a press release, police encountered a few incidents of counterfeiting during the Royals’ postseason home games, and said stakes are even higher with the World Series starting tomorrow.
“For a big event like this, the scammers and scalpers will come out,” Sergeant Rob Rickett, Fraud Section supervisor, said in the release. “They always do.”
Tickets are already sold out from primary sources like Major League Baseball. Now some fans are turning to the secondary market, where security measures start falling away. Police are advising buyers to use reputable brokers to purchase secondary market tickets. These services should offer a refund if the tickets turn out to be counterfeit.
Although it is legal to resell event tickets for more than their face value in the state of Missouri, police are also advising against trying to purchase tickets from someone in the parking lot of the stadium. The Kansas City Police are proactively working to stop illegal ticket sales by checking secondary market web sites and conducting other enforcement.
