The Northeast Community Center is one step closer to becoming a reality.

Monday, March 14, at 10:30 a.m., a ground breaking ceremony will be held at the center’s future site, 9th and VanBrunt.

The ground breaking is for major site improvements on the site, which will include site demolition, grading and landscaping, construction of a parking lot, event plaza with outdoor amphitheatre, a concessions building, trails, outdoor lighting, and one competitive soccer field and two practice soccer fields.

Those slated to attend are 3rd District City Council members Sharon Sanders Brooks and Melba Curls and representatives from the Kansas City Board of Parks and Recreation Commission and Citizens Committee.

“We definitely would love for the community to come out and support this event,” said Heidi Downer, director of marketing for the city’s parks and recreation department. “We’re very excited to get a community center eventually located in the Northeast.”
