One man is dead and a male suspect is on the run following a police chase of a stolen vehicle.
Today, just before 4 p.m., officers attempted to conduct a car check on a stolen auto in the 5700 block of Independence Avenue. The suspect vehicle rammed the police vehicle and fled, at which point officers pursued the vehicle.
After traveling East on Independence Avenue toward the highway, the suspect vehicle entered I-435 driving southbound in the northbound lanes. As a result, the officers discontinued the pursuit.
Approximately 45 seconds later, officers in the area of Truman Road and I-435 came upon what appeared to be an accident involving a pedestrian.
Officers observed a male in the road who appeared to be deceased. Nearby they observed a vehicle that matched the description of the stolen auto.
Officers were able to take one female into custody near the suspect vehicle. The male driver fled the scene on foot. After an extensive search utilizing 690 and canine, the suspect was not located. AIU will continue with their investigation.
The victim has been identified as Ronald Campbell, a 44-year-old white male.
In the search for the driver detectives have identified a person of interest but he is not in custody at this time, If that changes and/or a warrant is issued, updates will be shared here.
