UPDATE:

The suspect was recently identified as Eugene Turner III, 28, of Kansas City, Mo. During the incident Sunday morning, Turner fired several rounds at police officers before being shot and killed. It is not yet known why he was walking the streets of Northeast Kansas City carrying a gun.

The two officers involved in the shooting are now on paid administrative leave, which is normal procedure in all officer involved shootings.

KANSAS CITY, Missouri — One person is dead after a Sunday morning shooting in the Northeast.

According to a press release from Detective Kevin Boehm, of the Kansas City Police Department, at around 4:45 a.m. Sunday, officers were dispatched to the area of Independence and Myrtle Avenues for a call of a suspicious person with a gun. Upon arrival,  officers encountered the suspect in the area of Sixth Street and Myrtle Avenue, where shots were then fired.

The suspect was pronounced dead by ambulance personnel, with an unknown handgun discovered near the suspect. This is an on-going investigation and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
