KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Kansas City police officers shot and wounded a man Thursday morning after a short pursuit in the Northeast.
Police officers initially arrived on the scene around 10 a.m for a disturbance call at 10th Street and Oakley Avenue. Captain James Schulte said a call was made about a man riding a bike with a cart filled with scrap metal. The caller also mentioned the man was armed with a handgun.
As soon as officers arrived, the 40-year-old, white male took off on foot. Schette added the man then pulled out his gun.
“At short distance, the individual pulled the weapon out and leveled it at the officers, pointed it at the officers,” Schulte said. “In defense of their own lives, they pulled their service weapon and fired at him.”
Carol Brooks, a resident of the area, heard the shots and ran outside to see what was going on. Brooks mentioned the man was running behind houses.
“I heard the first shot, started walking out of the house and heard the other two shots,” Brooks said. “It looked like he was shot in his shoulder, arm and buttocks.”
Brooks mentioned seeing the man bleeding in three different areas. The suspect is in stable condition at a nearby hospital. Authorities said no officers were hurt in the incident. More information will be provided once it becomes available.
