KANSAS CITY, Missouri — A Kansas City, Mo., police officer was involved in a shooting earlier this afternoon.

At around 2:30 p.m., officers arrived at a home on the 6400 block of 15th Terrace, between Fremont Avenue and Bennington Boulevard, to serve an outstanding warrant. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the subject, who then attempted to flee the residence. An officer believed the subject was preparing to shoot him and fired his weapon.

Sergeant Kari Thompson, KCPD Media Unit, said how many shots the officer fired was unknown. The subject was given first aid at the scene and transported to a local hospital, where he was last listed to be in critical condition. No officers were injured in the incident.

Thompson couldn’t say how many officers were on the scene to issue a warrant. She also couldn’t say whether or not the subject was in possession of a weapon at the time of the incident or where he was shot.

“The officer has been placed on administrative leave,” Thompson said, which is protocol for officer-involved shootings for the KCPD.

Family members of the subject gathered a block away from the scene of the incident. Neighbors consoled the family, saying they’ll “pray for him.”

Shaun Magana, the subject’s cousin, said his cousin is in his mid-30s and that his name is Anthony. Magana said his cousin, whom he described as a brother to him, wasn’t someone who would be armed.

“He’ll run but he’s not a violent person,” Magana said. “He will take you on a high speed pursuit of your life, but he is not going to shoot at you or stab you to get shot in his face in his backyard, in front of his mother and his pregnant girlfriend, dude.”

An area resident who wished to remain anonymous said this type of activity was not common for the area. The woman, who lives near the Bishop Sullivan Center, not far from the incident, said she’s worried about the children in the area and what this will do to them.

“At night there’s a different crowd, but in the daytime it’s a tight little community,” the resident said. “There’s lot of families around here.”
