Northeast News
May 4, 2011

Since 1932, Northeast News has been around, but we haven’t allowed ourselves to fall behind in technology.

We’re adapting.

When Facebook first came on the scene, it was geared toward college students. Now, Facebook is open to all and you’ll find everyone on the site from Lady Gaga to CNN to yes, the Northeast News.

Last year, we created our own Facebook page, Kansas City’s Northeast News, and continue to update our format. We include photos on Facebook you won’t find anywhere else and we post breaking news. Recently, we posted exclusive photos from the scene of a standoff in Northeast. We kept our readers updated on the status as information became available. Last Friday, we kept our ears and eyes open for news and discovered a tree had fallen on a home in the 100 block of South White Avenue. We posted exclusive pictures and included a detailed story on our site. One of our Facebook fans posted, “Great Coverage!!!” On another story, a fan posted, “I love that you guys are on top of breaking news! kudos!”

We’re proud to say we now have 1,868 fans who have “liked” our page.

In addition to Facebook, we also have a Twitter account, NortheastNewsKC, for the tweeting crowd.

Don’t forget to check out our YouTube page at KCNortheastNews, either. We’ve added several new videos. Our videos range from feature homes to breaking news to family-friendly events.

Website re-design

When we first launched our website, we updated it once a week with articles you’d find in our print edition. In January, we launched a website re-design and decided our readers deserved more than once a week coverage on our website. Now, you’ll find stories you won’t find in print or you’ll see breaking news. We update our site daily, whether it’s with stories or fun photos of local events.

We know that Historic Northeast sometimes gets a bad reputation in the media. So, we like to be a little different. Yes, there are times that “negative” stories must be printed. It’s our job to dispel rumors and report the facts. But, we also like to focus on the positive things happening in Northeast.

Did you read about how Gladstone Elementary School first graders are learning about “local hero” Ollie Gates or that several Northeast High School seniors won an award for their video that discouraged teens from texting and driving? Did you see our pictures of the Chalk Walk? Yep, there’s definitely some great things going on in Historic Northeast.

Keep reading our paper every week and you’ll find out all about them.
