A Kansas City man is in custody facing six felony charges in relation to a domestic violence incident that began on Friday January 13th in Kansas City’s Historic Northeast neighborhood near Gladstone and Belmont Boulevards that resulted in an Amber Alert being issued a few days later.
Markelv A. Avery faces two counts of Domestic Assault 3rd Degree, two counts of Unlawful Use of a Weapon and two counts of Armed Criminal Action.
According to court records, Kansas City, MO Police Officers were dispatched to the area of Belmont and Gladstone Boulevard on the evening of January 13th on a disturbance call involving a party with a weapon. Upon arrival, officers located the victim who stated Avery, her ex-boyfriend had assaulted her by choking her, striking her and pointing guns at her.
Avery allegedly arrived at the victim’s house in the 400 block of Belmont on the evening of January 13th at a high rate of speed and parked, blocking the victim’s car in the driveway. Avery then approached the victim who was in her vehicle in the driveway and pointed a gun at the victim who was in the driver’s seat then threatened her. When the victim put the vehicle in park, the automatic locks unlocked the vehicle and Avery entered the back seat where he began choking the victim from behind.
The victim managed to free herself after accidentally pulling some of Avery’s dreads out of his head, then running in to the house where she called police.
A witness stated the defendant had threatened the victim with a gun and had choked and assaulted her. Later the defendant turned himself in at KCPD’s East Patrol Division after a reported child abduction.
The charges related to the child abduction remain under investigation.
