Missouri House and Senate Apportionment Commissions are continuing to discuss redistricting possibilities.

The U.S. Constitution requires every state to redraw its legislative and congressional district lines following the U.S. decennial census.

Prior to the 2010 U.S. Census, Missouri had nine congressional representative districts. However, with recent Census data, that number may drop to eight. Currently, there are 34 Senate districts and 163 House districts.

District 40 State Rep. John Rizzo is encouraging Northeast residents to voice their opinions regarding redistricting during the May 24 apportionment commission meetings in Kansas City.

Both meetings will be held in the Pierson Auditorium, University Center, University of Missouri-Kansa City, 5000 Holmes, Kansas City, Mo. The House Apportionment Commission will meet at 9 a.m. and the Senate Apportionment Commission will meet at 1 p.m.

“If they (public) want their voices heard, this is the time to do it,” Rizzo said. “It is very important that this (40th District) seat stay a true Northeast seat. This seat has always been the voice for Northeast and without it, we will be lost in the shuffle.”
