KANSAS CITY, Missouri — There are plenty of events taking place in and around the Kansas City area this weekend that will make you feel proud to be an American.

Most notably are the festivities planned at the World War One Museum during Memorial Day Weekend.

The museum offers more than 10 events during the course of the weekend, including the AVTT Traveling Vietnam Wall, an 80 percent scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. measuring nearly 400 feet long. The AVTT Traveling Vietnam Wall, supported by UMB Bank, will be accessible on the afternoon of Friday, May 22, including a 6 p.m. opening ceremony, through the 2:30 p.m. closing ceremony on Monday, May 25. The Traveling Vietnam Wall, a 400-foot replica of the Vietnam memorial in Washington, will be set up on the southeast lawn of the Liberty Memorial this weekend as part of Memorial Day events.

The Museum will offer free admission to the public on Memorial Day (May 25) courtesy of Lead Bank when it hosts its traditional Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. on the deck of the Liberty Memorial. Following the memorial, a Walk of Honor brick dedication will take place at 1 p.m. The public ceremony at 10 a.m. features officials, dignitaries and patriotic performances. A shuttle service will operate Saturday through Monday from the parking garage behind Union Station. Also on the lawn will be a display of military vehicles, including a Huey helicopter from the Vietnam period. Donations of gently used clothing, shoes and household items for disabled veterans will be collected in the loop drive south of the memorial from Saturday to Monday. The Celebration at the Station concert conducted by the Kansas City Symphony will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday in front of Union Station, with fireworks following.

Union Cemetery Historical Society’s annual Memorial service will take place at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 23, at the cemetery, 227 East 28th Terrace. The event is weather permitting. Location is the flagpole in the middle of the cemetery. Scouts, re-enactors and others will remember those who served their country with an “old-fashioned” ceremony.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, located at Broadway and W. 42nd Street, will hold its service at 11:45 a.m. Monday, May 25, at the memorial. In case of inclement weather, it will be moved to 3027 Walnut St.

The Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery will hold two ceremonies on Memorial Day. The first ceremony will begin at 9 a.m., at the Leavenworth National Cemetery, 150 Muncie Road. The second ceremony will begin at 11:40 a.m. at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery, 395 Biddle Boulevard. The Leavenworth Memorial Day Committee sponsors the annual Memorial Day ceremony at Leavenworth National Cemetery. The committee is also sponsoring a free concert that takes place at 7 p.m. Friday, May 22, at the Leavenworth High School Performing Arts Center, 2012 10th Ave. The concert will feature the Phoenix Brass ensemble from the U.S. Air Force Band of Mid-America. No tickets are required for the concert.
