Historic Northeast icon Mary Therese (Sheil) Carroll passed away Dec. 28, leaving behind a legacy.

A founding member of the Sheffield Neighborhood Association, she also served as president of the of the State of Missouri Federation of Women’s Democratic Clubs and president of the 5th Congressional District of Democratic Women. Her founding of the Sheffield Neighborhood Association led directly to the establishment of the Old Northeast Inc. (ONE Inc.), a local Community Development Corporation that assisted neighborhood associations with navigating the bureaucratic waters of City Hall. A number of other entities were under the umbrella of ONE Inc., including the Historic Northeast Restoration Corporation and Northeast Mobile Crime Watch. The crime watch model was developed in Historic Northeast and later became a national model for helping law enforcement identify trouble crime spots.

Carroll routinely fought for the betterment of Northeast and didn’t shy away from keeping local politicians accountable.

Carroll was born on Feb. 20, 1930, to John Parnell Sheil and Laurine Bridget (Kelly) Sheil, founders of the Sheil Funeral Homes, Inc. Following in her parents footsteps, she became a licensed funeral director in the state of Missouri. She is survived by her husband, Gene and their children, Jean Therese (Carroll) Ferrara (D. Aldon – deceased); Richard E. Carroll, Jr. (Terry) and Dennis P. Carroll, Sr. (Kathleen); 9 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at the McGilley & Sheil Chapel, 11924 E. 47th St., Kansas City, Mo. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, 3736 Lee’s Summit Rd., Independence, Mo., with interment following in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Arrangements are by McGilley & Sheil Chapel.
