KANSAS CITY, Missouri — One man has been charged for an assault that took place early Monday morning in northeast Kansas City.

According to a press release from the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office, Johnny B. Alvarez, 21, of Kansas City, Mo., has been charged with first-degree assault, a class A felony, and armed criminal action. The assault happened just after midnight Monday near the intersection of Wabash Avenue and 20th Street.

According to court records, the Kansas City Police Department officers responded to 1312 Michigan Ave., for a shooting that occurred near 2024 Wabash Ave. Upon arrival, officers found the victim bleeding profusely from the front of his head. The victim was transported to an area hospital and received multiple staples and stitches to close the wound.

The victim later told police that Alvarez and a witness got into the victim’s vehicle to smoke methamphetamine. When he started to leave, the victim heard a gunshot and felt a pain in the back of his head. The victim said he believed Alvarez wanted to shoot him because he had left a gang. Alvarez confessed to shooting the victim but told police he shot him because he said offensive things. Prosecutors requested a $100,000 bond.
