After winning their first Interscholastic League championship in five seasons, the Northeast High School varsity boys’ basketball team set their sights on claiming the Class 4 District 14 championship. However, it wasn’t meant to be.

During two previous contests, the NEHS boys defeated Lincoln Prep, but during district play, they lost to the Blue Tigers 76-74 during the District 14 semifinals tournament at the Interscholastic Fieldhouse on Feb. 22.

“The boys had a good effort and managed to get as close as two points before the final minute when the Blue Tigers pulled away to account for the final score,” said NEHS Activities/Athletic Director Jim Conaway.

The Vikings finished their season with a 19-5 record and as both Interscholastic League champions and Interscholastic League Invitational Tournament champions. The Viking girls ended their season with an improved effort in a 46-33 loss against Southwest in a first-round district game on Feb 20. Coach Shavon Robinson helped the Viking girls finish with their best in six seasons – 8 wins and 17 losses.

The Class 4 District 14 tournament will wrap up Thursday with championship games in both the boys and girls divisions.

The Lincoln Prep girls will play Notre Dame de Sion at 5:30 p.m. and the Lincoln Prep boys will play Center (a 62-58 winner over East in the other Wednesday night game) at 7 p.m. Games will be held at the Interscholastic League Fieldhouse, 6410 Swope Parkway, Kansas City, Mo.
