KANSAS CITY, Misouri — The Salvation Army wants to light up your weekend.
The Salvation Army will officially kick off its 2014 Christmas Campaign with Kansas City’s annual holiday lighting event, City Lights. The event begins at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, downtown at the Barney Allis Plaza, 12th and Wyandotte Streets. The event will feature entertainment by the Raymore-Peculiar High School marching band. Fox 4 Chief Meteorologist Mike Thompson will serve as emcee and Santa Claus will make a special appearance. Complimentary refreshments, including Christmas cookies, hot chocolate and coffee from the Roasterie will be served prior to the ceremony, beginning at 5 p.m.
During the ceremony, The Salvation Army’s 2014 Christmas Campaign Chairs Margi and Keith Pence will announce this year’s campaign goal, which will be followed by a spectacular 12 minute synchronized Christmas music and computerized light show on the front facade of the 22 story Marriott Hotel. The Salvation Army’s annual Christmas Campaign raises money to fund Salvation Army programs year-round. These programs include food pantries in eight community centers across the metropolitan area, emergency rent and utility assistance, a children’s shelter for abused and neglected children, alcohol and drug abuse treatment programs, senior programs and visitation, homeless shelters and transitional housing and prison correctional programs.
