College students hit the streets of Northeast in full force Aug. 7 to give back to the community.

Students, along with faculty and staff from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (KCUMB) volunteer each year in Northeast during the first week of school. This year, they clocked more than 1,000 hours of community service in one day.

KCUMB President and CEO Marc Hahn said it is a great opportunity to give back to the community.

“This goes well with our university motto of improving the well-being of the communities we serve,” Hahn said.

At Northeast Key Shop, 3828 Independence Ave., the students painted a mural of keys on the east exterior wall to help preventing gang tagging. Students also organized stock and arranged window displays at City Union Mission’s Second Chance Thrift store, 2301 Lexington Ave., and worked with Della Lamb students in KCUMB’s community garden.
