KANSAS CITY – Kansas City Fire Department responded to a structure fire at an apartment building this morning on the northeast corner of St. John Avenue and Denver Avenue. One woman was rescued from inside the building.
The streets were promptly closed as crews lined the street to work the scene.
Deputy Chief Jimmy Walker said everyone in the apartment units made it out safely except one woman, who was in the hallway with her dog when crews arrived on scene. The woman and her dog were rescued from the building and are in good condition.
Walker said light smoke was visible when crews arrived, and the fire was contained to one apartment unit.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, although word among residents and bystanders lining the street said it was possible someone left a space heater on, causing the fire. This has not been confirmed.
