Four Kansas Missouri School District (KCMSD) students will soon face expulsion hearings in connection with recent fires at Northeast High School and Southwest High School.

KCMSD Board of Education members are waiting for the Kansas City Police Department’s bomb and arson unit to complete its investigation before scheduling the expulsion hearings.

On Feb. 11, three fires were started at Southwest, said André Riley, senior media relations specialist for KCMSD. The largest fire occurred on the second floor of Southwest.

At Northeast, two students allegedly started a fire on Valentine’s Day.

“We’re asking our students in our community to report these types of instances to the TIPS hotline,” he said. “The (Northeast) principal (Marshall Peeples) is doing a great job of addressing the situation and encouraging his students to be proactive and take responsibility for their school, so they can have a good learning environment.

“This was a set back, of course, but Northeast is a good school and those kids will get a quality education. We’re determined to make that happen, as well as the parents, peers and community. We all stand united.”
