“Nixie,” a community notification service, was introduced to Kansas City residents Monday, June 18.

Nixie is a no cost notification service that informs residents of alerts, advisories and community messages through text messages and emails.

Nixie allows the city of Kansas City to send out alerts to specific areas instead of announcing information to the entire city when the information only affects a small portion of the city.

Alerts will include urgent items that could adversely affect life and property, such as boil orders and health pandemics.

Alerts will not include severe weather.

Advisories will include information affecting a specific geographical area, like water main breaks, wastewater overflows, major road closures, food establishment closures, unscheduled city office closures, among other items.

Community messages will be sent via email and will include scheduled trash delays, city-sponsored events, back-to-school vaccination clinics and more.

Residents can customize the service by choosing what types of notifications they would like to receive from the city.

To register for Nixie, text your zip code to 888777 or register online at www.nixie.com.
