Flower pots, which line the sidewalks of Independence Avenue have provided positivity to businesses and restaurants along the Avenue since this beautification project by the Independence Avenue Community Improvement District (CID) began.
The weekend of Oct. 26, these carefully procured flower pots, along with streetside gardens and trash receptacles, were destroyed and disheveled by a white-male suspect — who went on a rampage, said CID Team Resource Manager, Laura Birdsong.
Birdsong, along with her crew, quickly surveyed this damage — picking up the pieces and working to replenish plantings along the Avenue over the course of Sunday, Oct. 27 and Monday, Oct. 28 — including one just outside the Northeast News newsroom.
While many neighbors and community members have voiced concerns and visited the CID office (2657 Independence Ave) to give personal statements, Birdsong said the suspect was taken into custody and is out of harm’s way to the community.
