KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Get Your Green On at the City Market.

This free, family-friendly annual event is focused on promoting ecological sustainability and greener living in terms of local food production, resource conservation and renewable energy. Events will take place from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturday, April 25.

The City Market is teaming up with Surplus Exchange to collect electronics for recycling. Instead of sending outdated electronics to the landfill, bring them to Third and Walnut Streets between 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and recycle them safely. Surplus Exchange charges a collection fee of just $10 for CRT monitors and $.25/pound for CRT televisions. Everything else is free. A list of acceptable items can be found online at http://surplusexchange.org/newsite1/1852-2.

Items should be unpackaged. Only cash and checks are accepted. Items that do not require a collection fee are considered tax deductible donations. In addition to electronics recycling, this year’s Get Your Green On will feature a variety of interactive exhibits and educational activities:

  • The Midwestern Beekeepers Association will display a living observation hive and offer information about the role of the honey bee in our food supply.
  • The Crossing will demonstrate weaving on a large-scale loom as old clothes are transformed into new colorful rugs. Rugs, recycled pallet furniture and tire planters will be on display and for sale.
  • Wyandotte County Conservation District will demonstrate do-it-yourself rain barrels and composters.
  • CultivateKC will feature an urban “agvocate” exhibit, “Together We Can Grow,” chalk board and Urban Grown Tour photo exhibit.
  • SeedSaversKC will offer information on cultivating, harvesting and exchanging seeds.
  • FoodNotLawns will provide information about organic growing.
  • BikeWalkKC will provide bike safety information, helmet checks and information about the BikeShare program and solar-powered stations.
  • A local nature center will provide a touch table of animal artifacts and resource conservation information.

Get Your Green On will culminate with a live performance from Eco Elvis on stage from noon – 1 p.m. Eco Elvis sings environmentally-friendly parodies of Elvis songs to “edutain” audiences about saving money, improving health and taking care of planet earth.

Coinciding with Get Your Green On, the Farmers’ Market will host the annual Missouri Prairie Foundation Native Plant Sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Native plants suitable for shade, partial shade, or sunny, and dry or moist conditions will be available.

In its 10th year at the City Market, the popular Community Yard Sale continues to provide an environmentally responsible option for reusing items which would otherwise find their way to local landfills. Downtown and community area residents are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to sell their used items and antiques at the Market. Up to 70 vendors showcase their antiques, collectibles, and gently used items. On Saturdays, the yard sale is held in City Market Park, and on Sundays, it’s in the Market Square.
