Kansas City hasn’t forgotten about Chouteau Courts.

As one of Kansas City’s oldest public housing sites, it’s considered “physically isolated” and is due for an upgrade.

Earlier this year, the Housing Authority of Kansas City (HAKC) received a $250,000 planning grant through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Choice Neighborhoods Initiative (CNI). HAKC plans to use the grant for Chouteau Courts and the Paseo Gateway.

To update community members and stakeholders on the process, Choice Neighborhoods Initiative will host a public meeting Thursday, Nov. 17. The meeting will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Don Bosco Educational Center, 531 Garfield, Kansas City, Mo. Refreshments will be available.

CNI representatives will provide an update on the planning process, as well as project goals and key demographic and survey findings. Beginning at 7:15 p.m. there will be break-out sessions to discuss redevelopment opportunities for the key corridors of Paseo and Independence Boulevard.

Several goals of the transformation plan for Chouteau Courts and the Paseo Gateway include providing mixed-income public housing in several areas, creating walkable city blocks with improved access to schools, employment and other services. The plan will also build on “neighborhood assets” that include three neighborhood associations, a business association and the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences.
