A Northeast resident was tasked with babysitting a one-year-old and has now been charged with child abuse.

According to court documents, Kansas City police were dispatched Nov. 12 to Children’s Mercy Hospital, where officers noted the child had bruises on both sides of her face, legs and torso. Medical staff also discovered the toddler had multiple bruises on her lower abdomen, hips and lower back, as well as a lacerated liver and pancreas and injured kidney.

Ryan J. Alexander, 22, originally told the mother that the child fell off the bed. However, when police questioned him, he said he punched the child in the stomach and threw her onto the bed.

Alexander has been charged with first degree assault, abuse of a child and first degree endangering the welfare of a child, all felonies. Alexander’s bond has been set at $250,000 cash.
