KANSAS CITY, Missouri — The City Planning and Development Department invites citizens to a public meeting to learn about the progress made on the proposed Independence Avenue Zoning Overlay District.

The public forum will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, at North-East Library. At the meeting, city staff will present recommendations from the project’s Steering Committee, which focused on the areas from Forest to Hardesty Avenues. The proposed standards will affect future development, enlargements and expansions of existing buildings, facade changes, change of use or occupancy in a building and signage along Independence Avenue from Forest to Ewing Avenues.

This Overlay will be the City’s primary tool to ensure that all new development in the proposed boundaries on Independence Avenue is pedestrian oriented, high quality, and reflects the desired character of the community. Public participation is essential while developing the Overlay. Staff will give a short presentation, allow citizens to view graphics of the proposed design standards, and collect feedback from those in attendance.

A third and final public meeting will be held April 21, 2016, to present the final draft of the Overlay before it is submitted to the City Council for adoption. If you have any questions, please contact Kellie Johnston Dorsey at (816) 513-2889 or email Kellie.Johnston@kcmo.org.
