For years, graffiti has plagued Historic Northeast and other parts of Kansas City.
Now, the City of Kansas City is taking a more proactive approach and has formed the Graffiti Abatement Program. Through the newly formed program, the city has acquired 10 power washers and graffiti removal chemicals that registered neighborhood groups can rent – free of charge – to remove graffiti.
Graffiti removal training for neighborhood groups will be held this Saturday, Aug. 25, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the parking lot of the Neighborhood Preservation Division, 4900 Swope Parkway.
Power washing company Hotsy Equipment Company will be on site to provide training on how to properly use the power washers and graffiti removal chemicals.
Staff will provide a live demonstration and neighborhood groups will get a chance to practice.
In addition, the city will hand out informational materials regarding graffiti and proper removal techniques.

Another component of the Graffiti Abatement Program is the city’s Swap Shop, which will provide free paint to residents and five gallon buckets of paint in white, brown and grey to neighborhood associations with a letter from the neighborhood president to cover up graffiti. The Swap Shop is located at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility, 4707 Deramus Ave., and is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
