A Kansas City North man faces a variety of charges related to a shooting incident that took place on Saturday night, March 2 near the intersection of 9th Street and Woodland Avenue.

Abdisalaan H. Mohamud faces Assault in the 1st Degree, Armed Criminal Action, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Resisting a Lawful Stop.

According to court records, Kansas City Police Department officers were dispatched to the 1400 block of Independence Avenue on a reported shooting call. Upon arrival, officers located a victim near 9th and Woodland Avenue who had been shot after a red SUV pulled up next to the victim’s vehicle, and a man (Mohamud) leaned out of the window with a rifle and began firing in the victim’s vehicle. The victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers in the area of the shooting were contacted by witnesses who stated they had seen a red SUV driving erratically down Independence Avenue and they observed a skinny, black male wearing a ski mask hanging out of the driver’s window brandishing a rifle. One witness took pictures of the vehicle and sent them to responding officers, who located the vehicle in the area of Independence and Cleveland.

Officers then attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the vehicle fled. Officers chased the vehicle and speeds during the chase reached up to 100 mph on city streets. The suspect crashed his vehicle at the intersection of Truman Road and Van Brunt Boulevard, where the suspect was taken into custody.

Court records also indicate that the suspect has a long history of violent and erratic behavior. He was convicted in January, 2023 of Second Degree Assault, a Class D Felony, and was, at the time of this crime, on parole/probation. Mohamud is currently being held in the Jackson County Detention Center on a $200,000 bail.
