A 59-year-old man has been charged with Second Degree Murder and Armed Criminal Action in the July 28 shooting of Manuel Valentine-Ruperto in front of 3406 Roberts Avenue.

Jerry Plater of Kansas City, Mo., is being held in the Jackson County Detention Center in connection to the crime.

Around 5 p.m. on July 28, officers were called to investigate a shooting near Roberts and Indiana. Upon arrival officers located an adult male lying on the sidewalk on the north side of Roberts suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

EMS responded to the scene and declared the victim deceased.

Plater and the victim had apparently been at odds over the sale price of a white Ford Mustang convertible. Witness reports indicate that Plater and Valentine-Ruperto got into an argument on the street and Plater shot the victim with a 12 gauge shotgun.

Plater was taken into custody earlier this week. Currently Kansas City’s homicide count stands at 123 for the calendar year.
