This week’s book recommendation comes from Phyllis Hernandez, Library Assistant at the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library.
She selected “The Good Immigrant” edited by Chimene Suleyman for our Banned Book series.
“With immigration currently being such a heated topic in our country, my book recommendation is ‘The Good Immigrant,’” Hernandez said. “This compilation of short essays was written by first and second generation immigrants. It allows the reader to get a better understanding of what it’s like to grow up in a country where not everyone is open to outsiders. An immigrant’s quest to “live the American dream” in a country built on diversity is not an easy journey. These heartfelt and sentimental stories allow readers to connect to immigrants on a personal level rather than the negative stereotypes often portrayed in the media. A must read for anyone living or working in The Historic Northeast neighborhood.”
“The Good Immigrant” is available as a paper copy or downloadable audiobook using your Kansas City Public Library Card.
