$7.7 million. That’s how much the Blizzard of 2011 has cost the State of Missouri.

Those clean-up costs include labor, equipment and materials.

Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) estimates more than 2,500 employees responded to the storm using approximately 1,600 pieces of equipment to clear the state’s 33,000-mile highway system.

Workers clocked in more than 90,000 hours and distributed more than 30,000 tons of salt and other abrasive materials to treat state roads and bridges.

In Kansas City alone, 5,700 tons of salt were distributed.

After working on state highways, MoDOT maintenance crews helped open 1,200 miles of county roadways in 16 counties at the request of Gov. Jay Nixon. MoDOT’s Kansas City District crews helped open county roads in Lafayette and Johnson counties, and received special equipment and crews from the St. Joseph and Joplin districts.

Despite the historic storm, MoDOT says it has plenty of salt and other supplies for the remainder of the winter and that its equipment is still in good shape.
