Local organization Azul Esperanza is bringing awareness to World Autism Month by hosting its “Art Without Borders Workshop” for kids who are neurodivergent — in collaboration with the Mexican Consulate of Kansas City — from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Saturday, April 5 at Scuola Nuova Charter School (535 Garfield Ave).

Families will have the opportunity to participate in a guided, bilingual art workshop for neurodivergent children ages eight to 13. Neurodivigent is used to refer to an individual who is on the autism spectrum and more specifically, someone whose brain processes information differently.

Through the collaboration of the Mexican Consulate of Kansas City, the workshop will feature three different stations, where children can create and explore different textures, materials and art methods. Translators will also be present at the event for families who need bilingual services.

This event will be free but families are encouraged to register their child in advance.

Miriam Gonzalez, founder of Azul Esperanza said that beyond spreading autism awareness, the event is to show Latino families that they have a community and to provide children with a recreational space to express their creativity and engage with others.

To further increase awareness, all art pieces created at the workshop will be highlighted at a gallery that will take place on April 25 at the Revolucion Educativa space.
