Kansas City Museum reopens to the public
The Kansas City Museum will return from its holiday hiatus for regular hours on January 4. After re-opening, docent-guided tours of the first floor of Corinthian Hall and the first floor of the Carriage House will continue Wednesday-Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

 

KCMO Parks and Rec 2017 shelter reservations have begun
2017 Parks and Recreation shelter reservations officially began on Tuesday, January 3. Reservations can be made online or in person at the KC Parks District 3 office (6901 Elmwood Avenue), at the Loose Park Garden Center (5200  Pennsylvania), or at any of the city’s community centers. Shelters are available for rental from May 1 through October 31.  All reservations are for the entire day (9 a.m. to 10 p.m.). Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Let it Snow at Union Station
Until January 8, the planetarium at Union Station will hold daily 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. screenings of ‘Let it Snow,’ an all ages musical journey. The cost is $3 per showing. Visit boxoffice.unionstation.org for more information.

 

Friday, January 6
Northeast Fit-Mix
Stop by the North-East Library (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Friday, January 6, beginning at 9:30 a.m. for a fitness class. The class alternates between chair fitness techniques and the new “Soul-Flo” yoga activities. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise in these courses at the North-East Public Library.

 

Knights of Columbus Dinner/Bingo
The Knights of Columbus Cardinal Glennon Council #4613 will host a dinner/bingo night on Friday, January 6 at St. Anthony’s (3208 Lexington 64124). Dinner will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and will consist of pizza and salad for $5 or a hot dog for $2 or a salad for $3. Bingo will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

 

Story time at NE Public Library
Enjoy story time at the North-East Library (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Friday, January 6, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Bring your kids into the library for stories, songs, crafts and more.

First digital steps: a workshop on using a new device
Did you receive some new technology for the holidays? Need help operating it? The Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library has you covered on Saturday, January 7, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The two-hour workshop will walk you through the basics and answer your questions on your new device. North-East Book Club
The North-East Public Library’s book club will next meet on Sunday, January 8, from 2:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. Come to this monthly meeting to share your passion for books and join in on riveting book discussions.

 

Knights of Columbus breakfast
The Knights of Columbus will host their next breakfast on Sunday, January 8, from 8:30 a.m. until noon at St. Anthony’s (3208 Lexington). Enjoy traditional Knights Breakfast sausage patties, pancakes, scrambled eggs and chorizo with coffee and orange juice. The cost is $6 for adults, and $3 for children under the age of 12.  Help the Knights of Columbus help others.

 

Monday, January 9
Tech coach drop-ins at North-East Public Library
Come out to the North-East Public Library (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Monday, January 9 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. to get some tips from a local tech coach. Computers will be available, and no appointments are necessary. Tech coaches can answer questions about a variety of subjects, including Microsoft programs, the internet, email, formatting a job resume and applying for employment online, and syncing your smart phone.

 

Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Meeting
The next meeting of the Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Association will be on Monday, January 9 at the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone).

 

Lykins Neighborhood meeting
The next Lykins Neighborhood meeting will be held on Monday, January 9, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at 3704 E. 12th St. Join Lykins neighbors as they review crime and grime, organize neighborhood cleanups, and focus on creating a better community. Other neighborhoods in Historic Northeast are more than welcome to join.

 
Tuesday, January 10
Parks Board Meeting
The next meeting of the Parks Board will on Tuesday, January 10, beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the KC Parks Administration building (4600 East 63rd Street Trafficway). The Board of Parks and Recreation holds public meetings twice a month on Tuesday at the Parks and Recreation Department headquarters. All meetings start at 2 p.m. and are open to the public.

 

Independence Plaza Council Monthly Meeting
Independence Plaza Council will host its monthly meeting on Tuesday, January 10, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Woodland Elementary School, 711 Woodland Ave., KCMO.

The Pendleton Heights Neighborhood Association will host its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, January 10, from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences,1750 Independence Avenue.

Jan. 18 – NEKC Chamber business classes to begin
Now that its new headquarters are open, the Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce is looking to utilize its space. To that end, the chamber will be offering business-oriented courses for chamber members in 2017, with the first course set to be held on Wednesday, January 18, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Chairman of the Chamber Board and local attorney Jerry W. Potocnik will lead discussions about business organizations, finance, taxes, insurance, local and state government, real estate leases and acquisitions, estate planning and more.
