Community crime meetings
Community members are continuing to meet every Wednesday at noon at the North-East Public Library, 6000 Wilson Rd. The group brings neighborhood safety concerns together and forwards them to the police department. All are welcome.

Mother’s Day Luncheon/Bingo
The Daughters of Columbus are hosting a Mother’s Day luncheon and bingo game at 11:30 a.m. at 2415 Independence Ave. Cost is $4 for lunch and $4 for bingo and will include door prizes. All are welcome.

How does your garden grow?
The Long family had beautiful gardens at Corinthian Hall. Come design your own garden, plant some seeds, help “plant” a paper garden and play plant themed games. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. at the North-East Public Library, 6000 Wilson Road, Kansas City, Mo., and is geared toward ages three and older. Admission is free.

East High School celebrates cross cultural connections
East High School students will premier original student video and books celebrating cross cultural connections at 6 p.m. at the Screenland Theatre Crossroads, 1656 Washington, Kansas City, Mo. At 7 p.m., the film “Rain in a Dry Land” will be shown, free of charge. The verité feature documentary chronicles two years in the lives of two Somali Bantu families as they journey from Africa to America. It is a story of time travel, culture shock and a leap from the 19th to the 21st Century as these subsistence farmers find themselves in a mysterious and confusing land.

Pendleton Heights Neighborhood Association meeting
Pendleton Heights Neighborhood Association will hold its general meeting at 7 p.m. at Scuola Vita Nuova Charter School, 544 Wabash. Speakers will be Amber Trzinske, attorney at Legal Aid, and newly elected City Councilman Scott Wagner.  Trzinske will explain how she will help take action against abandoned and neglected buildings in the area and Wagner will talk about his vision to help neighborhoods.

 

Kansas City Museum gardening workshop
Bring your green thumb, or learn how to use it during the May 10 gardening workshop. Anne Wildeboor, horticulturist at Powell Gardens, will discuss the annuals and perennials that make good container plantings for our Midwest climate. Wildeboor will also give a planting demonstration, discuss proper care maintenance and sun and shade varieties. The workshop begins at 10 a.m. at the Kansas City Museum, 3218 Gladstone Blvd., Kansas City, Mo. Cost is $10.

 

EMPOWER Kidney Disease Classes
Free EMPOWER Kidney Disease classes are available on Tuesdays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The May 10 class will be held at Truman Medical Center Lakewood in Lee’s Summit, Mo. The classes teach attendees how to take control of kidney disease and make healthy choices. Call (816) 842-0076 to register.

Tour the World business crawl
The Annual International Business Crawl will be held Saturday, May 14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a reception from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Discover businesses along Independence and Prospect Boulevards on a walking tour or shuttle, and get your passport stamped at participating businesses. History Walk and Talk
Exercise your body and mind during the Kansas City Museum’s Summer Walk and Talks. Hear historic insights about Kansas City, while having a nice summer stroll through the historic Pendleton Heights and Scarritt Renaissance neighborhoods. Michael Bushnell, author of Historic Postcards from Old Kansas City, will lead the tour Sunday, May 15, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Attendees should meet at the museum, 3218 Gladstone Blvd., Kansas City, Mo. Cost is $5 or $15 for groups of four. Bottled water is included. Friends of Kansas City Museum and children under 10 walk for free. Ages five and up are invited to participate.
