Johnson County’s weekly community newspaper has shuttered its operation effective with this week’s edition. The Sun, which began as a mimeographed information sheet named The Prairie Scout in the garage of Stan Rose.

The paper covered news and events in and around the Prairie Village community. The Sun was sold to NPG Group in 2006 as part of a multi paper sale that included the Clay and Platte Dispatch, The Kearney Courier, The Liberty Tribune and The Wednesday Magazine that served the Waldo and Brookside areas of Kansas City.

In February of 2010 NPG shuttered the Clay and Platte Dispatches, laying off close to 60 employees. In May of this year, The Wednesday Magazine suspended its operation.

According to a story published in The Sun’s final edition, NPG will continue the publication of some of its other niche publications.

Long time Sun Publisher Steve Rose was quoted on John Landsberg’s Bottom Line Communications site noting that the paper’s closing was like losing a family member. The closure of the 60-year-old paper affects roughly 20 employees.
