An explosion in a manhole at Independence Avenue and Manchester knocked out power to businesses and residences along a 1-mile stretch of Independence Avenue Thursday morning at approximately 9:30 a.m.

Kansas City Power & Light and Kansas City Missouri Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and noted smoke rolling from the manhole that was located on the south side of Independence Avenue at the Manchester traffic light.

No injuries were reported and power was restored within approximately 45 minutes.
