The Kansas City Police Department responded to two area homicide scenes July 20 and 21. 

Officers were dispatched on a shooting call at 7:30 p.m., July 20 to 9th and Prospect. An adult male — later identified as Melquan T. West-Yancy — was found just east at 9th and Chestnut, which was declared the scene of the shooting. 

After suffering gunshot wounds, which required an EMS call and performance of life-saving measures prior to his transport to a local hospital — West-Yancy was pronounced deceased shortly after, according to a release from KCPD Media Unit. He was 25 years old. 

According to the release, this case is currently under homicide investigation. Detectives have begun interviewing witnesses from the scene. 

If anyone has any information they are asked to contact Homicide detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously to the TIPS hotline, according to the media release. 

Officers responded to a second shots fired call July 21 near 13th and The Paseo. While extensive information is unknown at this time, the victim is currently in the hospital with critical, life-threatening injuries — according to the media release.
