Cadets from the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department’s 180^th Entrant Officer Recruit class held their ceremonial run this morning from the headquarters building at 12^th and Oak downtown to the intersection of Admiral Boulevard and The Paseo where Patrolman Wright Dewey Bryant was killed in a shootout with a robbery suspect in 1923.

Following a briefing from Chief Stacey Graves, the recruits began a group run that went straight east on 8^th street, across The Paseo and back to Admiral Blvd. where a session of closing calisthenics was held. The run was lead by Academy instructors and fellow commissioned officers.

Each entrant class chooses an officer killed in the line of duty to honor on their ceremonial run.  

On December 1, 1923, officer Wright D. Bryant was shot as he attempted to arrest a suspect near Admiral and The Paseo who had just robbed a nearby filling station. Other officers shot and killed the suspect following a short foot chase. Patrolman Bryant succumbed to his injuries two days later at the hospital.

Bryant, badge number 193 was a two-year veteran of the department and was thirty years of age at the time. He was survived by his wife, one child, one sibling and his parents.
